I think that abiding is a much more accurate word for what he wants for us. Following is sometimes a natural result of abiding, but I think abiding is the bottom line.
I'm don't abide in Him because of my following; I follow because I abide in Him. What blows my mind is, I don't abide in Him because of anything I do - I was already IN Him... but being invited to be in agreement with and in awareness of this abiding makes the following irresistible!
I think it's both too, but it sure does bug me for some reason when I hear Christians say they are a follower of Christ, I think often they really mean follower's of religion..........we can only follow out of abiding. We can't follow apart from abiding, cause then what are we really following????

I am a former follower, now at home in His love. Remaining. Pickling as it were. Abiding!
Bino,
I think it's both. We, as His sheep, follow wherever His voice may lead us (John 10:27). We hear His voice more clearly when we abide in Him.

"I'm... don't..." grrrr. Been a long day!
I agree with Gary.
