I'll take a guess on the first one. My guess is "I don't know." ;)

As for number two, my guess is faith in Jesus.

My first thought was "Peter" then, of course, faith in Jesus.

Joel and Matthew,

Thank you for participating!

Jesus answered him [thief on the cross], "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise." - Luke 23:43

This is an incredible story of person (a criminal!!!) who was assured into the salvation Jesus offered. One of the reason I love this story is because there are no 'loop holes' in this. There wasn't absolutely any form of 'work' involved.

Second part, of cource "Faith in Jesus".

Are you sure they didn't let him down off of the cross for at least a few hours so he could go perform his religious duties and go to church, confess his sins, get baptized, give to the poor and so on? :)

Great one, Bino!

You mean he didn't turn 180 degrees and dedicate himself!?

I realize I can appear condescending to some but it's really my hatred of being under the burden of a performance-based mentality.

Many such beautiful stories are buried under religious over-processing. These people (such as the thief) acting in simple faith and as a result incredible things happen. This criminal's conversion was spontaneous, simple and innocent. It is when we add ourselves into the equation of Gospel, we lose the simplicity of its beauty.
I too get frustrated by the burden religion often puts on us. My response used to be anger. But now a days I just run as fast as I can. :)
